Fei Mui

Set in 1940s Singapore, Fei Mui is a stylised 2D animatic about a young girl named Chong, who was tasked by her mother to sell cigarettes to help with the family’s finances. Being illiterate, she struggled to do any business and had unfortunately came across a sleazy customer who not only lied to her but also stole all her stock. This sets off a desperate chase for the thief that unfortunately ends with her defeat, and punishment from her mother. The story ends with her neighbour, having seen the plight she was in, comforting her and teaching her how to count, cheering Chong up.

This project was done entirely by me as part of the Independent Project part of my final year. It took me approximately 12 weeks to complete everything from the character design to the storyboarding and the final compilation that you'll see here! The personal goal that I had set for myself was to create dynamic shots with chase scenes without losing the essence of the inspiration for this project which is an old memory from my grandmother's childhood that she always told me about growing up.
